Oscar Schmidt 'Galiano' Decalcomania Concert-size Guitar c 1930 | SOLD | (vbg2028) We've handled a good number of birch-bodied Schmidt guitars over the years and are never disappointed in the sound and playability. The decalcomania guitars were made likely from late 20s into the 30s, and were a reflection of the Schmidt Co. adapting to the Great Depression by reducing the cost of an instrument. Instead of more costly inlaid purfling trims, consumers were offered colorful decals. This example is particularly attractive with its colorful sound hole ring and fancy top decal.
The body is slab-sawn solid birch. The neck is likely poplar with a black-painted maple fingerboard. The body is finished in a brown tone, with the neck stained a complimentary but darker shade. The top is ladder braced.
The neck measures 1 7/8" across at the nut, and string spacing is 2 3/16" across at the saddle. The neck is carved in a rounded 'V' shape, typical of Schmidt guitars of this era. The scale length short scale, 25". The body measures 13 11/16" across the lower bout.
A top crack was glued sometime in the past. We completed a neck reset, replaced the cracked maple bridge with an ebony replica, installed a set of period but mis-matched tuners, glued a few braces and leveled and dressed the frets. The nut appears original, and the bridge pins are replacements.
The action is set at 6/64" and the guitar plays well producing the ladder-braced, boxy tone; strong in the mids with ringing highs. A real nice finger-picking guitar.
No case, but we can provide a gig bag.
