Martin 00-18 1941 | $9575 | (v2211) The C.F. Martin company offered the 00-18 model beginning in 1898, with production continuing steadily into the 1970s. In 1941, 251 00-18s were produced. It's a popular model with players today due to its balanced tone and comfortable size. This example is a clean representative of the model, and, a marriage of neck and body!
The guitar came to us with the '41 body, but, when the neck was removed, we discovered the neck dated to the 60s and possibly a Martin repair since it was seamlessly done. We were fortunate to source an original 1946 neck with an ebony truss rod, and married the two so that it's now a complete 1940s 00-18.
The back and sides are mahogany. The top is spruce, bound in faux tortoise with decorative b/w/b binding and sound hole purfling. The pickguard is faux tortoise. The bridge and fingerboard are Brazilian rosewood, as is the peghead overlay. The neck is mahogany carved in the typical Martin 'C' shape. The tuners are individual "Yoda head" Waverly 12:1 machines.
The body measures 14 3/8". Scale length is 25". The neck measures 1 11/16" across at the nut, and string spacing measures 2 1/8" at the saddle.
The guitar is in excellent overall condition. In its past, the bridge appears shaved a bit to lower the action, but not drastic enough to warrant a replacement. There are three short back cracks. A bit of binding was glued along the lower bout, treble side. We recently replaced the neck with a '46 neck, crafted a new heel cap and dressed the frets. The frets and fingerboard show little wear. The bridge plate is original and in good condition with one chipout between G and D strings, now repaired. There is some belt buckle wear on the back, and some finish crazing, nicks and dings from age and use, but overall a clean and solid example of its ilk.
The action is set at 6/64" and the guitar plays smoothly. It produces the coveted Martin tone with pleanty of power if needed, retaining its complex overtones and the Martin 'ring'. An inspiration to play and difficult to put away! This one is a great value for those seeking the coveted pre-war Martin tone!
Comes with a hard case.
