Gibson LG2 1946 | $OLD | (v2306) The LG series was the successor of the L-00 line of guitars, aimed at the hobbyist or semi-pro musician. The LG proved to be a popular line and ran for many decades. Although not a 'jumbo' size guitar, the LG filled a need for many a would-be folk singer. This particular example is either a '46 or '47 since it retains the script logo, which vanished from the Gibson line by late '47. The LG2 continues to be a popular choice for contemporary guitarists.
The top is X-braced (scalloped) and made from 'curly' spruce with the classic Gibson sunburst and faux-tortoise pick guard. The back and sides are mahogany and finished in a dark mahogany tone. Top and back are bound in white celluloid. The neck is mahogany, carved in a modern 'C' shape, and is topped with a Brazilian rosewood finger board. The head stock is painted black, and features 'Gibson' in the classic gold script. The truss rod cover is the typical bell shape. The tuners are the wartime variety with the riveted gears. The (replacement) bridge is Brazilian rosewood.
The body measures 14 5/16" across at the lower bout. The scale length is 25". The neck measures 1 3/4" across at the nut and string spacing is 2 1/8" across at the saddle.
The guitar has had a number of previous repairs: the neck was reset; the bridge and bridge plate replaced with appropriate materials and dimensions; center seam glued; side crack running through the center of the lower bout glued and cleated; a few top cracks glued; one back crack glued and cleated; pick guard re-glued. All the work appears to have been professionally done. We recently re-glued the (lifting) bridge, glued a brace and leveled and dressed the frets. There is evidence of much playing wear, nicks and dings from age and use, and the typical Gibson finish checking. Action is set at a very comfortable 4-5/64".
With low action and a comfortable neck, the guitar plays extremely well! The tone is very balanced and well-rounded, with nice note separation and good sustain. Wonderful finger picking and recording guitar.
Comes with a newer hard case.
