Gibson L0 1932 | SOLD | (v2212) Into the early 1920s Gibson was still producing relatively small-bodied acoustic flat top guitars. But by the late 20s, when size suddenly mattered, they began to produce what is now known as 'large-body' flat tops, which include the Nick Lucas, the L0 and L00 models. These ultra-light, all-mahogany L0s were only produced for a few years, with 1932 the end of this line. What separates them from the mid to late 30s L0/L00/L1 are the 12-frets to the body, thin fingerboards, and very light bracing. These early examples are among the rarest and best sounding pre-war flat tops availalbe in the vintage market. This particular L0 is a fine representative of that ilk.
The top, back and sides are a fine grade of mahogany. The top and back are bound in white celluloid, which frames the reddish tones of the mahogany. The sound hole features w/b/w rings and a faux tortoise pick guard. The neck is mahogany and carved in a modern-feeling 'C' shape, which is unique to this era, and soon to evlove into a thicker 'V' shape. The neck features an adjustable truss rod. The fingerboard is Brazilian rosewood and is a few mils thinner than the post-1932 L-series flat tops. The headstock face is painted a glossy black, and features Gibson in white script. The top features the sharp, knife-like X-bracing which adds to the light weight and responsiveness of the early L0. The original bridge is Brazilian rosewood. The mahogany heel block is stamped with FON 228, and is represented in Spann's Guide to Gibsons.
The top measures 14 3/4" across at the lower bout. Scale length is 25". The neck measures 1 3/4" across at the nut, and 2 3/8" across at the saddle.
Everything about this guitar is neat and tidy, including the interior. We recently reset the neck and reglued the pick guard. It appears that the original bridge was shaved a hair in the past, but still allowing 7/16" of string height on the bass side. The original finish still sparkles, with only some play wear in the first position of the neck, and a couple of nicks from age and use. Otherwise a crack-free, all original guitar.
Includes its original soft case in good condition.
