Gibson J45 1968 | $2250 | (c2302) The Gibson J45 has been considered the 'workhorse' of acoustic guitars based in its long lineage and ability to hold its own in acoustic ensamble outfits as well as provide warm tone as a solo instrument. The serial number dates this 'square shoulder' example to 1968, assuming the Gibson serial lists are accurate. In the late 60s, the model went through a series of changes, some cosmetic, some structural. Some of the features suggest this guitar was made during Gibson's Diamond Jubilee era of '69-'70. The guitar features a solid spruce top with an attractive 'cherryburst' finish, bound in w/b/w celluloid with matching purfling around the sound hole. The original adjustable bridge appears to be Brazilian rosewood. The pickguard is teardrop-shaped faux tortoise. Back and sides are mahogany with the back bound in white celluloid. The neck is three-piece mahogany with what appears to be a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The headstock is finished in natural mahogany, and features 'Gibson' inlaid in pearl and a truss rod cover embossed J-45 in white. The tuners are enclosed Kluson 'Gibson Deluxe'. The body measures 15 15/16" across the lower bout. Scale length is 25 1/2". The neck measures 1 11/16" across at the nut with string spacing 2 1/8" across at the saddle. The top is X-braced with its original large bridge plate.
Overall condition of the guitar is very good, with only one top crack repair. A small section of the pickguard has come unglued under the area of the high E string. The finish is very clean with only a few checks and nicks from age and use. Action is currently set at 7/64" with room for adjustments at the saddle.
The guitar plays well with a very clear projection and ring to its tone, and produces the coveted J45 thump when pushed, but can retain a woody 'sweetness' when fingerpicked.
Comes with a hard case, possibly original to the guitar.
