Gibson J45 1958 | SOLD | (v2209) In 1942 the torch was passed from the J35 to the J45 as the workingman's dreadnaught 'jumbo'. It was very similar to the J35, but for some bracing changes, neck profile, and the move to the gold foil Gibson decal. Today, the J45 continues its long run and remains a workhorse acoutic jumbo, while those from the 40s and 50s are well respected and sought after in the vintage guitar market. This example is squeaky-clean, and was purchased new in 1958.
The back and sides are mahogany. The top and back are bound in b/w binding, and the sound hole features b/w purfling. The spruce top features the iconic Gibson sunburst, and the 'pointy' pickguard. The bridge is Brazilian rosewood with two pearl dots which hide the anchor bolts. The neck is mahogany and carved in a comfortable 'C', typical of this era for Gibsons. The fingerboard is Brazilian rosewood with pearl position dots. The headstock is painted a gloss black and sports the gold Gibson logo. The original tuners are enclosed Kluson strip tuners.
The jumbo body measures 16" across at the lower bout Scale length is 24 7/8". The neck measures 1 5/8" at the nut and string spacing is 2 3/32" at the saddle. Action is set at about 6/64".
This one-owner jumbo remains in excellent, original condition, clean both inside and out. There is some finish wear from an old strap in the first position area. There is one (common) pickguard crack. The frets were leveled and dressed and the tuners serviced. The guitar has never had a neck reset, and does not need one, as there is plenty of saddle. The finish glistens, and shows only a few nick and dings from age and use.
The guitar plays easily, and produces the typical bone-rattling power one would expect from a 50s J45. The bass is deep, the mids powerful and the trebles shimmer. Truely a tone monster and a flatpickers dream. Played fingerstyle, it can become quite intimate.
Comes with its original Gibson faux-aligator soft case.
