Custom Build Gambler 12-String Jumbo | $2800 | (v2344) This is a custom, one-off jumbo 12-string built to the specs of the jumbo 12s made in the Oscar Schmidt factory in Jersey City, NJ in the first quarter of the 20th century. And it has a little bit of a story. It was made a few years ago in California by a part time builder .. the label inside lists this guitar as #14. The buyer of the guitar gave it a less than stellar 'relic' workover. Next, the guitar ended up in an auction house in NJ and somehow found its way to a guitar dealer in Florida. We purchased it last year at the Philadelphia guitar show because it played and sounded great. We sent the guitar to builder Brad Goodman who gave it the 'Gambler' treatment, and wow! ..its cool factor jumped off the charts!
The back and sides appear to be mahogany. The top is spruce and ladder braced in the old Stella tradition. The neck appears to be mahogany and carved to similar specs as the original Stella 12-strings, but with more of a 'C' shape than a 'V' and actually quite comfortable in the hand. The neck is bolted to the heel block as well as glued and features an adjustable truss rod. The bridge is some type of hardwood and carved in a pyramid shape, looking much like bridges found on old Holzapfel 12s. The fingerboard is a type of hardwood and dyed or painted black. The tuners are Stu Mac vintage style.
The body measures 15" across at the lower bouta and is a full 4 9/16" at the end block, deeper than a typical Stella 12. Scale length is 26 1/2". The fingerboard measures 2" across at the nut, and string spacing is 2 9/16" across at the saddle. Action is set at about 5/64".
With low action and comfortable neck the guitar plays amazingly well! The deep body delivers plenty of punch and vintage 12-string tones, with sustain that really lets the guitar ring. This is a perfect guitar for picking the likes of Blind Willie and Leadbelly, Spanish style or with a slide.
